I have the best husband in the entire world. My anniversary present was tickets to see Hamilton!

Everyone around me knows that I’m a theater geek, and I was dying for tickets. I’ve had to pass up on quite a few shows over the past many years, but not this one. I was so excited!

Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway

Because this was such a special occasion, I’ve decided to add “guest commentary” from Brendan’s Snapchat. Ha, ha!!

Snapchat Commentary for Hamilton

Before seeing the show, it was only fitting to stop by the The Schuyler-Hamilton House in Morristown. It’s only open on Sundays or by appointment, so we couldn’t go in, but it was neat to see.

The Schuyler-Hamilton House

* The Schuyler-Hamilton House, also known as the Jabez Campfield House, was built in 1760 on the eastern edge of the small village of Morristown. In 1765, a young doctor, Jabez Campfield, purchased the attractive four-bedroom home. He and his bride, Sarah Ward, lived in the house for fifty-six years, until 1821. Dr. Campfield served as a surgeon during the Revolutionary War.

During the winter of 1779-80, Dr. Campfield’s house served as the home for Dr. John Cochran, who was assigned to General Washington.

Dr. Cochran’s wife was the sister of General Philip Schuyler. Mrs. Cochran knew her niece, Elizabeth (Betsy) Schuyler, had met Alexander Hamilton during the summer of 1779, and she had been very impressed by him. When Mrs. Cochran became aware that Alexander Hamilton was stationed at General Washington’s headquarters, only a quarter mile away, she invited Elizabeth to spend the winter with her.

Very soon, Alex and Betsy began courting, often in the Campfield House. By April they had reached an “understanding.” They married at Betsy’s home in Albany, NY, in December, 1780.

** In early 1780, Elizabeth went to stay with her aunt, Gertrude Schuyler Cochran, in Morristown, New Jersey. There she met Alexander Hamilton, one of General George Washington‘s aides-de-camp, who was stationed along with the General and his men in Morristown for the winter.[8] (In fact, they had met previously, if briefly, two years before, when Hamilton dined with the Schuylers on his way back from a negotiation on Washington’s behalf.[9]) Also while in Morristown, Eliza met and became friends with Martha Washington, a friendship they would maintain throughout their husbands’ political careers. Eliza later said of Mrs. Washington, “She was always my ideal of a true woman.”[4][10]

The relationship between Eliza and Alexander quickly grew, even after he left Morristown, only a month after Eliza had arrived. By early April they were officially engaged, with her father’s blessing (something of an anomaly for the Schuyler girls—both Angelica and Peggy would end up eloping).[11]

I could have just sat there for hours, imagining the comings and goings of Eliza and her family.

And the funny thing is… The home is situated right there, in the middle of an ordinary neighborhood. If you drove past and missed the plaque next to the house, you’d have no idea of it’s amazing history.

I would love to live so close to “history.”

After hanging around, and pondering the everyday lives of the Schuyler family for about 15 minutes, we set off for The City. We had dinner reservations before the show at Carmine’s, so we had to hustle.

I can’t even express to you how much I miss being able to go into The City and see a show. If had the opportunity to move back home, I’d snatch it in an instant. Sigh…

Carmine's

I don’t wanna say that Carmine’s is the only “it” place to go for a meal before or after the theater, but it definitely makes all the lists. Next time we’ll probably go to Sardi’s too.

After we rolled out of Carmine’s we had some time to kill, so we walked off some of our dinner.

Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway

We found the stand-alone Hamilton store across from the theater, and did some shopping. I was “relatively” good. I didn’t have much of a choice.

And then, as if we didn’t already stuff our faces enough, we decided to all share a pretzel.

New York's Finest

New York’s Finest were out and about in force. And boy, they looked just a little different than they did, the last time I was in the city. To see them outfitted like this was just a little scary. And sad. Sigh… Thank you all for everything you do!

While we were waiting for the show to start, I overheard some guy saying… “We are in the most coveted room in the country, right now.” I guess so… I have never seen a Broadway Show generate this much hype, or create teen idols and heart-throbs. I was hoping it would live up to all my expectations.

And the verdict… It was amazing! Pure Genius. Everything a theater experience should be. Worth every penny that my husband paid for resale tickets, LOL!
