My Son Wanted a More Mature Bedroom

Happy February! I thought I’d share Brendan’s bedroom today. Because I didn’t have a ton of money to allocate towards it, it’s taken a while to get to where it is. It’s not done, but it’s done for now. You can see the previous version by clicking here.

He knew he wanted a more mature bedroom, but beyond that, he didn’t have any particular theme or idea in mind. The only thing that was important to him, was that it was masculine and cozy. I tried to talk to him about it, but he just kept telling me to do whatever I wanted. He couldn’t be bothered. He’s always been that way when it came to his bedroom. Go figure. He’s quite the clotheshorse and a big fan of Polo, so I asked him if he wanted to do a Ralph Lauren inspired bedroom. After I showed him some examples of what I had in mind, he was fine with it.

I didn’t have a big budget, so I re-used a lot of things he already had. I watched for sales, did some antiquing and shopped the rest of the house. Like I said earlier, the room isn’t finished, but what I really meant to say is, it isn’t perfect. That’s just my hang up. He wanted masculine and cozy, and I’m pretty sure I can check off those boxes, so to him it is perfect.

The antique Eiffel Tower postcard picture used to hang in my dining area, so I rescued it out of storage.

I had the frame, so I just had to find a picture for it. I thought this one was fun.

I’ve had the antique trunk for years, and the last time you saw it was in the living room. I had all of the accessories on top of the trunk, but the lamps are new. They aren’t particularly masculine, but I wanted ones that were adjustable for height. I found them on sale at Pottery Barn, and used reward points to get them very cheap. As a matter of fact, they were cheaper than buying a pair of lamps at Home Goods.

I already had the antique engraving and the frame, so I just put the two together.

The “TV stand” is the same IKEA bookshelf  he’s had since his last room update. I really wanted to replace it with something nicer, but I just couldn’t spend the money needed to find something of equal functionality. Someday…

Those two handsome devils were inexpensive Home Goods finds, but they are actually very accurate looking antique reproductions of phrenology busts.

I moved his apothecary jar of matchbox cars from the side of the bed, to the shelf over the TV. He’s got quite a few vintage Lesney and Matchbox from my Grandfather, and the rest are his favorites from when he was little.

That’s a picture of my Great Uncle on the High School Football Team. He’s the one on the top, all the way to the right. The shelf itself is new, replacing the one from IKEA. Both the shelf and antique targets were from Pottery Barn, but again, they were on sale (maybe clearance) and I used reward points to make them even less.

I got the giant “B” from Michaels to add some height. I planned on painting it to resemble a zinc letter, but never got around to doing it. Sigh…

The headboard is another new purchase. I can’t remember if we got it from Walmart or Amazon, but it was on sale and ridiculously cheap. I think we paid like 60 bucks for it? It might have been 90 to 100 with tax and shipping. I love the headboard, but I’m not sure I love the way I put it together. His bed used to be on risers so I could store things underneath. Occasionally, the bed would slip off the risers and worry me. After I decluttered, I got rid of the risers for safety reasons. Fast forward to now… The headboard has slots making it possible to attach to bed frames of different heights. Right now, the bed frame is pretty low and attached at the lowest set of slots. If I were to remove the pillows, you would see a gap. Also, the headboard is adjustable from full to queen, so you can see that the headboard is a little wider than the bed. I said I’m done with the room for now, and I really don’t want to put the risers back, but I might try to find a higher bed frame. I just think it’ll look a lot nicer. But for now, it’s OK.

I stuck a vintage 21 Jump Street photo in a frame and hung it over the bed. I can’t believe it’s been 30 years… Johnny Depp was so cute! The irony is, I was Brendan’s age when it first came on TV. I was a huge fan. Huge! I once made Dustin Nguyen stand on the street corner in NYC for 15 minutes, until I could find someone with a pen to get an autograph. I’m older than dirt.

The bedding is new. The fox pillow is from Pier 1, but everything else is Home Goods. The only thing in the room that’s actually Ralph Lauren are the tartan pillows. Anything nicer wouldn’t be practical or appreciated (except by me).

I got the two little antique race horse engravings on EBAY for a steal.

The two wooden french fashion plates on either side of the bed came from an antique fair. I’m not sure how old they are, or what they were originally used for, but I love them. They’re so different. They aren’t in perfect condition, but I like them that way.

The antlers on top of the bed were on clearance from Ballard.

I already had the round table, quilt and scarf on the other side of the bed, so no money spent there. Actually, the quilt on the table used to be on my bed. I just got new bedding for myself, and I needed some kind of table skirt, so it was perfect.

We moved the secretary up from the computer room, and he already had the Star Wars poster.

The shadow box frame is another Home Goods purchase.

Here’s a peek inside the secretary. The baseball glove was my Dad’s when he was a kid, and one of the cannons belonged to my Grandfather.

The David Winter Cottages belonged to my cousin who passed away.

He has a lot more Star Wars memorabilia, but this is what made the current cut.

The Steiffs belonged to my Dad as a kid.

This grouping is new. It’s just a picture in an expensive frame, and the hook was on clearance from Pottery Barn.

The lamps on the TV stand used to flank his bed. They just received new lampshades.

So that’s Brendan’s bedroom on a budget. I’m still waiting for the picture below to arrive from Pottery Barn, but it’s back-ordered. I’ll probably rearrange things and integrate it over the bed. Other than that, and the possible higher bed frame, I’m done. I just wish I could capture how cozy it is.

I just got new bedding and curtains for my room, so I’ll share that soon. But first, I want to do an update on my decluttering. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you all have a great week!
