Gallery Walls on my Staircase

My staircase has been a work in progress for the past seven years. It’s not perfect, but I’ve gotten it to a point where I’m happy with it, and I can live with it for a while.

I chose to convert all the family photos into Sepia, so it would have a uniform look. Most of the frames are black, and the ones that aren’t will eventually be changed out. Probably.

Doing a gallery wall, especially one this size, is a royal pain in the ass. I love it, and to me it was worth it, but if you don’t have patience, don’t even attempt it. I spent countless hours trying to get everything spaced out “just so.” And, every time I added something else, it had to be done over. A template only works once.

I have spackled, without exaggeration, hundreds of holes in these walls over the years. Hundreds. My husband warns that the walls are so full of holes, if a strong wind comes along, they will just collapse. He might be right.

It was very hard to photograph as I have zero natural light, and it’s such a narrow space. I apologize for the less than perfect photos.

My father made this Raggedy Andy in kindergarten. I love it!

So, I have a few spots where photos are just taped to the wall… I got the idea from looking at someone else’s gallery wall. I had several spots that looked awkward, as they needed to be filled, but nothing looked right. I simply bought some fancy Washi Tape, and stuck them directly to the wall. If I had a more “sophisticated” home, I wouldn’t even attempt this, but I can get away with it in this place. It’s fun and whimsical!

I wish I could frame every piece of artwork that my son came home from school with, but this is my favorite one.

All of my collage frames have themes. The one below is my Mother’s family . Some of my collages are grouped by “family,” others are grouped by time periods. As is usually the case, I have more pictures of one side of the family, than I do of the others.

I have a few locks and keys mixed in, here and there. I want to eventually add a few more real antique “hardware” elements, such as antique levels and hammers.

I’m pretty lucky to have family photos that go back so many generations. I think they’re so much fun to look at it. And as you already know, I think photos are meant to be displayed. If you’re never going to look at them, what’s the point of taking them.

The chair below was mine, when I was a little girl. It was also used by my God Daughter. The blanket was my carriage blanket. I think they’re appropriately displayed in my “family gallery.”

So that’s my staircase. Do you have a gallery wall in your house?
