What to Expect When You are Having New Floors or Carpets Installed

We finally decided to bite the bullet and have someone come in, and install new flooring. We’ve been putting it off forever, due to time and money constraints. I finally woke up one day and said enough is enough. I couldn’t take it one more day. I was living with this… (And that’s just a sampling of how bad it was.)

(I’ll do a before and after post real soon!)

If I had known what to expect, what a massive ordeal it was going to be (at least for me), I probably could have dealt with it for a few more years. Lol! Sigh…

As soon as you sign that contract, the flooring company wants to come right away. Immediately. They want to be at your house the next day. Well, that might be ok if you have an empty house. And it might be ok if you are a minimalist and don’t have a lot of stuff. But that wasn’t ok for me.

In order for them to come and install your new flooring, you have to clear the spaces completely of knick knacks and small furniture. Any frames you have on the walls have to be removed and all bedding has to be stripped. They take care of moving the large furniture.

We decided on new carpets in the bedrooms and on the stairs, and hardwood in the upstairs hallway, the landings and the computer room. The only rooms left were the bathrooms, the kitchen, and living/dining room.

Anyway, I told the flooring guy that I needed at least three weeks to get my house ready for them to come. I knew it was going to be a nightmare, but I really had no idea. If I had a garage, attic or basement it probably would have been a lot easier.

BEFORE (The Preparations)

The first nightmare was taking down the gallery walls on the stairs. I mean you can’t just pull the frames off the wall and stack them in the corner. You have to take them down and wrap them and place them somewhere safe where they won’t get scratched or dinged.

My bathroom looked like this… I wasn’t able to use it.

My living/dining room looked like this… It actually looked a lot worse at one point. We couldn’t sit on the couch.

My kitchen was a disaster. We went out to eat a lot! Make sure you budget for that.

And after all that, I still didn’t have enough room for everything. I had to bring a ton of stuff to storage. And it’s a good thing I was able to round up some boxes, or that would have been another expense.

My husband and I fought about having too much stuff and having a house that was too small, we fought about cooking and going out to eat… We fought about EVERYTHING. Something so simple turned into a huge amount of stress.

And then, we had to bring the puppies to the vet for boarding. That was a pain and a hefty expense.

I thought we had prepared for everything. By the time the guys showed up, I was a nervous wreck. My eye was twitching on overdrive.

DURING (The Installation)

Day One was the installation of the hardwood. One guy worked on the computer room…

And another worked on the upstairs hallway.

All seemed to be going well. The guys were on time and very pleasant. They would let themselves in and out, as they went outside to use the saw. I had nowhere to go, so I sat on the very edge of the couch watching TV.

All of a sudden, the guy inside the computer room started to use a saw of some kind and sawdust came billowing out, like smoke, setting off the fire detectors. Uhhh… No one told me that they were going to be using a saw inside the house. If someone had told me that they were going to do that, I would have covered everything. I would have prepared even more. Almost simultaneously, they guy working upstairs starting sawing too! Sawdust smoke was everywhere. It was so bad that I had to go outside. I’ll admit that I’m naïve when it comes to home renovations, but I can’t be the only one. I really wish someone would have mentioned it.

Besides the sawdust, there was another other issue. Glue kept seeping out between planks of wood, on the bottom landing of the stairs. The guys covered it with painters tape, left me some mineral oil, and told me I would have to scrub it clean myself, the next day. They said it would be hard, but I could do it. Really? You are putting that on me? Isn’t that your job? And then… They wanted me to sign off on the job. Well, before I signed that paper, I walked around notating every single flaw including the glue seeping out. The mood of the guys turned from pleasant to defensive. I wasn’t putting my signature on anything without also notating the areas I wasn’t happy about. I’m not that stupid. And I was going to tip them, but changed my mind.

Basically, I was pleased with the way everything looked, except that the quarter round they used looks like cheap plastic. I may have a handyman come and replace it, if I can’t get it to look better by painting it.

The whole experience left me in shambles. I’m a big girl, I should be able to handle it, but my nerves were shot. (I think it’s hereditary. My Mom used to get that way too.)

The carpet installers were coming the next day, and there was NO way I was going to be stuck home alone with them, like I was with these guys. I called my husband and told him that he needed to take the day off, because I refused to be here by myself.  He wasn’t happy, but he relented.

On a side note… If you are having both carpet and hardwood installed, they come and install the hardwood first and then they install the carpet. That actually helped a little. When they were done installing the hardwood in the computer room, we scurried that night to move stuff out of the bedrooms and into the computer room.

When they schedule installation, they tell you the guys will be there between 8 am and 6 pm. You are really at their mercy. At about 4 pm the next day, they called and said they were running late with their previous job, and they wouldn’t be able to make it at all that day. Really?

I’m paying for my dogs to be in the kennel, I made my husband take a day off from work and your not coming at all? I wasn’t happy. I had to go back to work the next day and even if I wanted to be home, I couldn’t take the day off. That meant my husband had to take yet another day off from work, and we had to pay for the dogs to be at the vet another night. The only silver lining to that was… I didn’t have to be home at all. My husband could deal with everything by himself.

The guys eventually showed up the following day, and according to my husband, all went well.

There was ‘one’ problem. The guys were finishing up, carpeting the last two steps, when they ran out of carpet. Sigh… They had to come back the next day to finish. The installers told my husband it was a very common occurrence, as we had two different types of carpet. We had one type of carpet in the bedrooms, and another for the stairs. My husband was un-phased, and still thrilled. He gave each guy an awesome tip, treated them to some beverages, and said “See ya in the morning!” And true to their word, they were back super early to finish the next day.

AFTER (The Clean Up)

As I started to clean up, I realized that the worst was yet to come. Because no one had told me about the sawdust, I wasn’t able to prepare properly. There was sawdust all over everything. It was in every crack and crevice.  Every surface of my house needs to be wiped down. Every curtain, blind, lampshade, knick knack, stuffed animal, blanket, towel, dish, etc., needs to be cleaned. The sawdust even got inside cabinets and drawers that were closed. We’ve changed the air filters three times. It sucks! And I have to work too. That amount of cleaning  blows when your house is in perfect order… But doing that amount of cleaning when your house looks like this… I cried.

To put it in perspective, It’s been over a month, and I’m no where close to being done. But… My big girl panties are back on, and I’m looking on the bright side. At least my house will be spotless for the holidays!

Good luck with your installation. I hope you learn from my mistakes.
